James R. Thornton, L.C.P.C.

Therapist in Northfield, IL

Through psychotherapy, I support clients in examining and exploring the intersection of identity and mental health. My goal is to aid my clients in realizing a mindset that is more authentic to their unique self, with both meaning and direction. I work collaboratively with my clients, drawing from a humanistic, narrative, culturally-informed and family systems approaches, to build a relationship that is trusting, non-judgmental and compassionate. Additionally, I teach my clients coping skills when appropriate, including mindfulness practices, solutions-focused techniques, and cutting-edge interventions drawn from the latest research. I also troubleshoot more specific concerns, including challenges with interpersonal communication and stress-management. In this way, there is space for my clients to address challenges as they arise organically through the process of therapy. This creates opportunities to learn and practice skills independently, with a newfound sense of self-reliance and confidence. I seek to help nurture a strong and consistent sense of self, so my clients can bring forth the best versions of themselves.

My background including working in adult and adolescent residential settings, inpatient and outpatient psychiatric settings, as well as experience in working with individuals and families from diverse backgrounds across the Midwest. I received my Master in Counseling Psychology at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. I additionally have studied psychotherapy from a Jungian perspective through the C.G. Jung Institute in Zurich, Switzerland, exploring the impact of archetypes and symbolism in conceptualizing addiction, trauma and healing.

I specialize in working with trauma, depression and anxiety, and explore my clients’ identity across culture, society and values. Additionally, I have extensive experience working with youth and young people. I work to support youth through processes of fostering identity formation, working through challenges of emotional regulation and expression, challenges in family dynamics and expectations, and navigating personal, societal and social pressures.  Understanding your place in the world can be difficult, especially when facing added difficulties brought by concerns related to mental health.
